Why lock out the ability for the user to do anything?  Maybe their system
allows a valid hostname for the SOCKS server.  Why arbitrarily deny them
that option?  Don't limit what your application can do based on assumptions.
Allow the option of typing a SOCKS server hostname.  If the situation the
user is in requires an IP address, they will use that.  The user might only
have the SOCKS server name and not the IP address.

An analogy would locking out the Z key on the keyboard because most words do
not use it.
